BALIFOKUS delivered training material about solid waste management and treatment regarding to
Training on Solid Waste Treatment activity organized by Dinas Kebersihan dan Pertamanan (Badung)
on April 18, 2012 in Denpasar. The activity was held within a few days provided the information and
training on solid waste issues in general. The participants were communities in Badung area
(the representatives mostly from the community empowerment institutions managed by local government).
The local government will start adapting a certain system of solid waste handling and develop programs
related to environmentally management.
BREES Youth Award for Sustainable Development Winners Visit to Sanitation Projects in Denpasar (Bali)
A team from BREES Youth Award for Sustainable Development (UNESCO’s program) visited two sanitation
projects, DEWATS SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) and DEWATS CBS (Community-Based Sanitation)
which both are located in Ubung, Denpasar. Forty children between 12 and 17 joined the visit were have
won small grants to start projects on composting/recycling/clean energy in and around Cibodas Biosphere
Reserve, West Java. This visit aimed at introducing the team with samples of BALIFOKUS’s existed projects
and as well as familiarizing on the various sanitation practices by communities.
Bali-Nusra Region SLBM DAK 2012 Field Facilitators Training
BALIFOKUS has trained 162 field facilitators in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. The participants of the
training came from Bali and East Nusa Tenggara areas. The participants from the local staff government
(Public Works Agency) also invited to the training. The training aimed to provide comprehension on the
SLBM program. Moreover, it is addressed to prepare reliable field facilitators for the program practice.
BALIFOKUS as the trainer of both the technical and social facilitators presented several subjects related
to the community-based sanitation issues.
BORDA - Partner Evaluation and Planning Workshop 2012
Project Progress Update by BALIFOKUS (BORDA Partners)
The workshop was held on January 11-13, 2011 and attended by BORDA partner’s staffs in Indonesia.
It was divided into several sessions primarily the discussions on project progress delivered by the
partners. BALIFOKUS delivered program achievements gained during the past year and other issues
such as DEWATS CBS program planning for 30 areas and some constraints remain on DEWATS SME,
DESWAM, KIPRAH programs due to strategic approach to the communities is still being carried out, as
well as the implementation of HIA program.
ASM Conference on Environmental, Socio-economic, and Health Impacts of Artisanal and Small Scale Mining
Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) plays an important economic role in many developing countries.
Small-scale mining can be extremely environmentally damaging and often has serious health and
safety consequences for workers and surrounding communities. The international conference on
environmental, socio-economic, and health impacts of ASM which will be conducted in Malang in
Feb 7-8, 2012 provide opportunity for scientists, policy makers and mining industries to get together
and exchange experience in the ASM sector.

Yuyun Ismawati: Waste warrior keeps on fighting
After the past two years focusing on the completion of her master’s degree on Environmental Change and Management at Oxford University in the UK, Indonesia’s influential environmental activist, Yuyun Ismawati, now 47, can’t wait to roll up her sleeves again and get back into the world of environmental activism.
For the past at least 12 years, the founder of, and now advisor to, the Bali-based Bali Fokus has initiated various waste management programs promoting positive attitudes toward waste.
